Perfil epidemiológico do paciente com câncer de cabeça e pescoço atendido no setor de odontologia do Hospital Aristides Maltez no ano de 2006.

RESUMO

Cancer constitutes a public health problem and displays high mortality and morbidity rates. The development of regional epidemiological researches are important to characterize the peculiarities of the population throughout Brazilian?s regions. The purpose of this study was to establish the profile of the patient with head and neck cancer attended at the Dentistry?s sector of Aristides Maltez Hospital (Salvador, BA) during the year of 2006. Ninety four patients were analyzed, being mostly males (72,34%), mestizos (58,51%), with mean age of 57,52 years; 74,47% were born in the rural zone and 52,13% lived in that area. Illiterate or with low schooling (79,79%) and married (51,06%) individuals were predominant. The oral cavity represented 50% of the cases and, in this location, the tongue and the floor of the mouth were more prevalent. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most prevalent histological type (80,85%). At diagnosis, the lesions presented bigger dimensions (T3 and T4) in 59,58% of the cases, no lymph nodes metastasis in 60,64% and distant metastasis in just one case (1,06%). The most prevalent clinical stages were III and IV (68,09%) and the moderately- (38,30%) and well-differentiated (29,79%) histological grades were more prevalent. Daily tooth brushing was done by 88,30% of the patients, however the use of dental floss and antiseptics were infrequent. The most prevalent dental treatment done was extraction (88,30%) and the most common treatment needed was dental prosthesis (73,40%). The tobacco and/or alcohol habits were present in 87,24% of the cases and the use of both together represented 62,77%. It was more prevalent the duration for using tobacco or alcohol of more than 30 years and the age to start the use of tobacco of 15 years or lower (56,25%). Lesions in stages III and IV had a bigger trend to occur in males, blacks, drinkers, residents in the urban area and that have started to smoke with more than 15 years of age (p<0,20).
