RESUMO

The public policies established in Brazil in the eighties, in searching to adjust the serious macroeconomic unbalances, were applied in a period when world productive restructuring and globalisation were intensified. Brazilian government and entreprises seek to adapt to the new requisition of stabilization and international competitiveness, by up-dating the productive and organizational processes and by reducing costs, what resulted in the relative downfall of the salaried jobs and the increase in the proportion of self-employed workers. The research aims to contribute to the analysis of the Brazilian self-employed worker profile, in examining the composition of those workers according to qualification, school level, average earnings, working hours and gender.
