RESUMO

Introduction: Absenteeism is a complex phenomenon, with multiple causes and which generates direct and indirect costs to society. It has been a target of concern by many countries with the purpose of combating it, in order to promote the quality of life for workers and to reduce spending. In Brazil, this topic has been investigated among public servants in hospitals and universities, making necessary the expansion of the studys focus. Public employees have an image which is often distorted regarding their benefits. This has hindered the understanding of their becoming ill and the implementation of effective health policies that would benefit them. Objective: To study the profile of absenteeism for lower back pain among municipal public servants of the city of Goiania in the years 2008 and 2009. Method: This retrospective, descriptive study has a epidemiological character, using the database of the Municipal Medical Board. Information was extracted regarding leave of absence due to lower back pain. The authorizations for such absences were related to the following variables: gender, age, marital status, education, type of contract, length of time on the job and professional category. The data was analyzed statistically with descriptive and inferential analysis, using the computer software SPSS version 16.0 with significance level set at 5% (p_0,05). Additionally, the frequency, severity, proportion of time lost and the average duration of absences were calculated. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the FS/UnB. Results: 625 approved absences were analyzed, and these absences generated 10,431 days of absence in 2008 and 2009. The distribution of these absences occurred more frequently in the following groups: women, married, ages 38 to 47 years, averaging 10 years in their job, with elementary school education and predominantly working in areas of maintenance. There was a statistically significant (p _ 0.05) relation between days absent and age (>58 years) and time in any particular function (19-26 years) in 2008 and 2009. In this last year it was also relevant to the type of contract (commissioned employees). The indicators of absenteeism for 2008 and 2009 were respectively: frequency index = 0.009 to 0.015; severity index = 0.14 to 0.26, proportion of time lost = 13.89% to 27.34%, average duration of absences = 16.39 to 16.84 days. Conclusion: The involvement of municipal public employee from Goiania for LBP was influenced by age and workrelated variables such as time in the function and type of bond. This indicates that policies to prevent absenteeism should be implemented taking into consideration these factors and also the fact that this is a musculoskeletal disorder susceptible to intervention at the primary level with measures of health education.
