RESUMO

The study of teacher background is a theme that has long intrigued researchers, and has been gaining importance in the development of research. This study investigates teachers working in the state education network elementary school (final grades) and high school in the municipal district of Araucária. The proposed challenge of this work is to investigate the teachers professional background, their teaching practice, and their views on the teaching career. In theoretical terms, this research relies heavily on the ideas of Ramalho (2004), Nóvoa (1995) and Garcia (1998/1999); the discussion of teachers identity is based on the ideas of Pimita (2000), Dubar (1997) and Libâneo (2000); on the theme of teacher background, the authors Bello (2002) and Ramalho (2004) were referred to, while for the teaching career, the studies of Gatti (1997) and Zabalza (2004) were used. The basis of the research was a survey applied to the teachers, in which they answered questions addressing four distinct research groups: personal data, teaching practice, professional background, and their views on the teaching career. After collecting all the data, the information was analyzed, first as a whole, to gain an overall view of the teachers, and then the answers given by those teachers at the start of their career (with less than five years in the profession) were compared with the answers given by the more experienced teachers (with more than ten years in the profession). At the end, a comparative study was carried out between the data collected in the municipal district of Araucária and the national research carried out by UNESCO in 2002. From this study, it was possible to analyze the teachers perceptions in relation to the teaching career, evaluate their profiles, and verify their teaching practices
