RESUMO

The effects ofvisual screening at elementary school- educators perceptions. Blindness is one of most serious handicap , there is 45 millions of blinds and 135 millions with impaired vision with great risk of becoming blind, and 2/3 of these are potentially preventable in developing countries. Visual disability in children could impair psico-social development and learn ability. .In order to prevent blindness, in Brazil a National Program of Visual Reabilitation-" Campanha Olho no Olho / Veja Bem Brasil" was created, to perfonn visual screening in children of elementary school by educators. The objectives were identifY acquired knowledge of educators before the training of visual screening; quality of training and benefits of program. A descriptive and analytical study, transversal, was perfonned through application of structural questionnaires to participants of training in Curitiba-Pr, Brazil, 2000. 89,0% of a1l participants answered the questionnaire, but only 13% were teachers. The rate of professional satisfaction was high (IOO% of teachers and 96,8% of others). Between the teachers, the mean time ofprofessional exercise were 20,54 years, with a weekly working time of 40 hours (64,3%).Training was considered "good" by 85,9%of participants. Additional information was required by 59,3%. 87,3% said the screening must be perfonned during the first 3 months of year and 96,4% said it is very important. Only 1,0% of applicants think the teacher is responsible for the screening: There were no statistically difference between teachers and others professionals related to weekly working time, professional exercise and satisfaction.83,3% of spectacles were distributed and 85,7% of children had scholar improvement. Parents related some di:fficulties: absence of knowledge of children visual impainnent (50%) and economic difficulties (44,2%).Suggestions ftom the educators: screening perfonned by health professional, and extension of activities of screening. People ftom research had enough knowledge about visual screening, but they doesn t feel responsible by it, even considering it very important. The training was satisfactory and scholar benefits were c1ear. It s necessary find ways of encourage teachers to perfonn visual screening, once they are the most qualified professional to do it
