RESUMO

This study aims the avaliation of the relation and the environmental perception of the people who live in the Environmental Protection Areas of Alto Taboão in Espera Feliz, MG and that of Caparaó, MG. The approach has a qualitative nature. It has been used a field research methodology, a documental and bibliographic research as well as Quick Participative Diagnosis techniques, and interviews with the in resident, that have been previously structured. The comparative study on the selected APAs presented as result, that the existence of an infrastructure does not guarantee its implementation. Nevertheless it contributes to the sensitivity of the residents, being a spatial reference to them. In spite of the analysed populations being not aware of the fact that they live in a Protected Environmental Area, they are aware of the existence of environmental problems. About 80% of the interviewed people in Alto Taboão APA and about 40% in the Caparaó, do not understand the APAs meaning and its objectives. About 28% of the interviewed people in Alto Taboão APA and 10% in Caparaó APA, could not enumerate which are the benefits that an APA could bring to their communities and families. And most of them, 75%, do not believe that the APAs can cause damages to their communities and families. So, the APAs did not exert significant impacts in the everyday life of the studied communities and they have not accomplished the aims to which they have been created. It has also being observed that the local people are conscious of and claim the implementation of the conservation actions and the environmental recovering in APAs. Nevertheless, in order to achieve the conservation objectives, the participation of the communities in the management councils of the units is of extremely importance as well as the enlightenment of the APAs essential objectives and the authorities compromise on its implementation. The region has potential for the protection of wide areas by means of the integration or management of conservation units mosaics. The Environmental Protection Areas of Alto Taboão and Caparaó have to be implemented following its creation and management objectives.
