RESUMO

Theory and practice concerning subjective well-being and self-regulation mechanisms among aging people is benefited by better knowledge about relationships between the effects of activity of low impact on their physical and psychological well-being. It was carried out an investigation involving 40 women aged 52 to 79, not experienced in hydrogymnastycs. Along four months they attended to an educational program comprising sessions of practice of 30 minutes, twice a week. Objective: Identifying and decribing the effects of regular practice of low impact physical exercice on physical and memory self-efficacy, as well as relationships between these variables and perceived physical and psychological well-being. Instruments: Sociodemographic questionnaire; physical (α=0,67; RYCKMAN et al., 1982) and memory (α=0,83; Berry,West, Dennehey, 1989) self efficacy scales, and domain referenced life satisfaction scale (α=0,89; NERI, 1998). It was a pretest/treatment/postest design. Results: 1) Pre and postest were characterized by scores higher than the medium point of all scales; 2) At pretest it occcurred high positive correlation between physical self-efficacy (ability and self-image) and mental health, as well as with satisfacion related to physical health, physical ability, mental health and social involvement; 3) From pre to postest there was improvement on physical self-efficacy – ability and self-image -, and on satisfaction concerning physical health and physical ability; 4) At postest there occurred high positive and statystically significant between physical self-efficacy – self-image and ability – and satisfaction with physical and mental health, and with physical ability; 5) At pretest, but not at postest, there was significant correlation between physical selfefficacy – ability – and social involvement. Data suggest that regular practice of low impact physical activity among women aged 50 to 70 improves their self-beliefs on health and physical self-efficacy, and seems to be useful adaptative strategy toward the challenges of aging process.
