RESUMO

This research aims to investigate the relationship between the esteem of place of 59 adolescents of both sexes residents on the districts of Bonsucesso, Henrique Jorge and JoÃo XXIII and its social act in these locations. We picked the public of this research at two public schools located in two of these districts. To better achieve the variables involved in person-environment relationship we used a multi-method composed of the instrument that generates the affective maps, focus group, urban trails and an additional questionnaire on social participation of adolescents in their neighborhoods. The survey of the esteem of place was built through the instrument that generates the affective maps (BOMFIM, 2003), whose methodology has allowed the survey of the esteem of place through the utilization of the following affective images: Destruction, Insecurity, Contrast, considered negative images, and Pleasantness and Belonging, considered positive. As for social participation of adolescents in the neighborhood we found a near absence of such engagement in social movements, while this sort of engagement is related in community activities like sports, cultural and religious events. Still, we found that only 35.7% of adolescents were engaged in them. Of these, 35.7%, participated in civic action activities, cultural, sporting and religious respectively 5%, 20%, 30% and 45%. We also found, backed by statistical test of chi-square, a correlation between the esteem of place and social participation of adolescents, so they tended to participate or not as long as they showed, respectively, a potentiated or unpotentiated esteem. Further analysis has shown that the type of community activity in which the teen was tied affected its esteem of place in relation to their districts of residence. We could still result in this study that the types of affective images that teenagers had about their neighborhoods housing echoed differently in their social participation. Thus, we find that the affective dispositions that most influenced the disempowerment of esteem and social participation of the adolescents were those linked to urban violence in the images of emotional insecurity and Contrast. This led us finally to conclude that the landscape of fear painted by the high rate of violence, crime and drug addiction of this region resonates more intensely in the disempowerment of its residents and its actions of meeting with their district and neighborhood.
