RESUMO

What brings men to destroy their own urban and architectonic artefacts? Artefacts which in a certain moment in History were built and valued, although destroyed and discarded through the timeâ The present dissertation proposes to discuss that issue, and focuses on the destruction of ParaÃso Chuch, which occurred in 1944, and MartÃrios Chuch in 1973. They were placed in Recife, in Santo AntÃnio and SÃo Josà districts, respectively. The investigation is led by two analytical axles, represented by questions in the institucional and urbanistic scopes of each one of destructions. Therefore, the narrative is structured in order to contemplate the historical trajectory of both churches, from the moment of their edifications to the full process of demolitions, marking the main facts related to their âlives and deathsâ. In this way, the institutions which joined those destructions process are indentified, willing to comprehend the motivations which brought the institutions to defend either the preservation or demolition of those temples. The following instituctions were analysed: Recife City Hall, City Planning Commission, National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute, Pernambucoâs Archeological, Historical and Geographical Institute, Culture Council, Senhor Bom Jesus dos MartÃriios Brotherhood, Santa Casa de MisericÃrdia Brotherhood, between the remainder. The way how the current urbanistic practices were related to the demolitions is also verified, enlightening which motivations guided them into specific decisions. In a similar manner, the way how the urban planners equated the construction with the demolition of areas during downtown urban renewal is indentified. This fact promoted a substantial transformation in its physiognomy. Finally, by means of a comparative approach between the stories of both churches, the comprehension of the motivations behind the churches demolitions is enlarged. It is identified that such demolitions point at two distinct processes, although they keep inwardly interactive relations, and together, offers a clear insight of a common issue that got them through. This insight is represented by the municipality power exercise on questions which refer to the destiny of city urban and architectonic artefacts
