RESUMO

We investigate the high capacity IM/DD (Intensity Modulation/Direct Detection) optical communication systems, including those that make use of optical amplifiers. Those systems present particular features, so new methods of analysis are needed. A careful system modelling was used, enabling the investigation of phenomena such as: relaxation oscillations and chirp from optical source (laser); dispersion and attenuation from transmission media (single-mode optical fiber) and non-stationary noises present in the optical receiver when photonic amplifiers photodiodes are used in the system. The performance evaluation is done by a new method, called error rate pattern, providing a wider view than the classical performance evaluation with the eye diagram. The error rate pattern interpretation is another important task; the optical system simulation is done step by step, showing the degradation caused by each part of the system and, finally, we discuss the system characteristics as highlighted by error rate pattern performance analysis. This work has a good potential to become a CAMAD (Computer-Aided Modelling, Analysis and Design), tool in the design of advanced optical communication links
