RESUMO

Eighteen Lauraceae species, occurrent in Distrito Federal Brazil, had their leaf blades examined with the aim to assess the general characters usually considered in studies about epidermis and leaf architecture beyond proposing the use of additional characters. For the venation patterns analysis, some characters were proposed as well as the distancing between secondary veins, divergence angle of secondary veins in relation to primary veins, density of areolation (number per mm2) and the number of its walls and the branchleted veinlets classification. As additional epidermal characters it was considered the number of sinus, internal angle and number of epidermal common cells sides, their arrangement on trichomes basis, the shape and width of subsidiary cells in relation to guard cells. The additional characters applied to the venation and epidermal leaf patterns associated to others of external leaf morphology showed to be enough for the species separation process in this study. It also made possible the building of identification keys.
