RESUMO

Our experiments show that an effective procedure for verifying the presence of singlet oxygen in biological systems involves the use of the following techniques: photon emission, emission spectra, product distributuion, D20 effect, DABCO effect, quencher effect and steady state techniques. Our experiments lead to the conclusion that singlet oxygen is present in the reaction of peroxidase with malonaldehyde, an important intermediate in lipoperoxidation of fatty acids; with indole-3-acetic acid, an important compound in plant growth; with folic acid, an important cofactor in cellular growth; with nitrosamines, extremely carcinogenic compounds, and with barbituric acid an important hypnotic. It is also present when prostaglandin synthetase acts on arachidonic acid. AlI of these systems can act on biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids, producing changes that might explain, for instance, spontaneous mutagenesis.
