RESUMO

The advent and regulation of new environmental laws are largely responsible for eliminating the flexibility in the use of cutting fluids. There is still a long way to be investigate before the cutting fluids are considered totally acceptable and not harmful. The associated costs are estimated in several billion dollars a year and their elimination may represent a significant economical incentive. Then, at medium term, the totally dry cutting seems to be a feasible choice. To maximize the cutting fluids usage in productive lines a large development on the cutting tools will be necessary. The research and production of materials with improved machinability and the change of the cutting parameters with the purpose of optimizing dry cutting are other alternatives to reach these objectives. This work evaluates the effects of changing the cutting parameters in cylindrical turning of ABNT 1045 steel, seeking the cutting condition that makes dry cutting as close as possible to the cutting with flood fluid in terms of tool wear. It is also the aim of this work to compare the surface roughness and the cutting energy obtained. The experimental results show that the increase of the feed turns dry cutting more appropriate and that when the cutting fluid is removed of the process, it is necessary to increase the feed, the nose radius of the tool and at the same time to reduce cutting speed. With this, life of the tool, surface roughness of the workpiece and energy consumed in the process are improved
