RESUMO
This research has as the main aim to analyse the use of squares aquatic components, according to useful and contemplative dimensions, considering the landscape design and history influences, in the way to contribute for the planning of open public spaces in Recife. Nowadays, the uses of the water surface in the squares, which are consolidated on daily practices have brought us to formulate the initial presumption that these uses, somehow, remain established in History, through the contemplative and useful dimension. The fountains from the XIX century were used, at the same time, as water supplier â useful dimension â and as a place for social meeting, because of the esthetics quality they used to provide to those open spaces â contemplative dimension. New uses of useful dimension have been identified in the squares, as car washing, fishing or baths. We have started from Recife historical reference, from natural components as rivers, sea or lakes, to understand the relationship between man and water as part of the urban space and to comprehend the presence of aquatic components in the squares as part of this urban structure. From the study of three squares, located in different places in the city, the descriptive-analytical method revealed how new uses of aquatic components have been causing changes in social and material order in Recifeâs squares landscape designs.
