RESUMO

This thesis has sought to know the role developed by computer, as a hybrid actor in the constitution of Brazilian Information Science as an autonomous science in relation to Library Science, discipline with which has interdisciplinary relation. This investigation was made based on the social-technical view about the formation and development of a scientific field as a constitutional part of the dynamics of society. Therefore, the assumptions from the Sociology of Science and the Innovation Sociology, or Sociology of Technique, were fundamental for this analysis. Several aspects of the establishment of Information Science in Brazil were retracted in this work, from the beginning to the present day, emphasizing their interdisciplinary characteristics, especially when it is about the intersection between the Computer Science and Library Science. The methodology used on this study was based on two different strategies for each data collection: 1. case study at the only course exclusively directed to the graduation in Information Science in Brazil, offered by PUC Minas, where interviews with teachers have been made considering key-actors on its creation process, and also the lecture and analysis of all Final Course Papers available on the intranet of the University, with the objective of recognizing different uses of computer by the students of the course mentioned. 2. Analytical and exploratory bibliographic research in all collection of the Ciência da Informação Journal, published from 1972 to 2007, with the objective of identifying reports of different usages of computer by Brazilian scientists of information. From the data collected, it was possible to visualize the translation of computer done by the scientific community of this field of knowledge, in order to realize if it favors the establishment of Information Science as an autonomous science in relation to Library Science. The obtained results reveal that Brazilian Information Science develops a relation with computer technology in which this equipment represents just an extra tool on the professional activity, not attributing any new and exclusives uses to it. As a straight consequence of this translation, the researches and the practice of this professional do not reveal any significant difference from the schedule and practice of the librarian directed to the matters of scientific and technological information. Therefore, computer can not be considered the basis constructive actor in the constitution of Brazilian Library Science, neither in terms of establishment of its autonomy nor as a delimitation tool of this field.
