RESUMO

Brazilian soccer was born in the Ãlite and went through a complex process of diffusion throughout the territory. Soon, by gaining popularity in the various social classes, soccer has become a major Brazilian passion. In this process, it hÃs been practiced in several social figurations which have been consolidated in the everyday of Brazilian cities and towns. Among them, there is the amateur soccer. By having the amateur soccer as objects of study, this paper attempts to investigate the meanings of this practice in the city of Recife, through the interdependent relations established with professional soccer, from the perspective of those who build it daily. Based on the Eliasian theory of social figurations and on the Bourdieusian concept of field, this study identifies and analyzes one of the webs of interdependent relationships which take place around this kind of soccer, in the city, by identifying its different meanings. At the same time and at different levels, the amateur soccer is a "barn of star footballers" and a "barn of friends."
