RESUMO

This report is the outcome of an exploratory research of the meanings of work . The purpose was to carry out an opinions sounding, that is, to perform a global investigation of the meanings of work for two population samples from two different firms operating in the same field of activity. The sounding took place by means of a 36-question questionnaire involving topics related to how work is perceived, and to its meanings and impacts on health and quality of life, in addition to socio-demographic data on the individuals concerned. What is Work? and What do you think about your present work? were the central questions this report analyzes. They were put to a sample of employees at a utility in the Paris region and to a sample of employees at a similar utility in Metropolitan São Paulo. A comparative São Paulo / Paris approach was taken as regards the importance of work, and similarities and differences have been noted for the analyzed samples, both in global terms and categorized by gender. The data have been treated with the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) statistical program and the two main questions were addressed with Factor Analyses. Factor analysis of these two central issues enabled condensing and summarizing data from several question items, and obtaining latent dimensions pooled into factors. Factor analysis was employed from an exploratory perspective.
