RESUMO

This research contributes to the understanding of power effects of psychodiagnostic practices through the investigation and analysis of lettres de cachet (Royal orders from the French Old Regime) and laudos (modern documents produced by psychologists). Foucault?s ideas on the archeology of knowledge (FOUCAULT 1975/1986, 1975/2001) are taken into consideration in order to investigate the relationship power/knowledge in producing, elaborating and using practices (tests and techniques) which aim at measuring and quantifying behavior and performance of subjects considered abnormal on account of difficulties with written language and/or school activities. The laudos which result from such practices of evaluating and diagnosing the so called learning difficulties and/or dislexia are historically constructed documents full of contradictions and directly influenced by medical knowledge of mental illness. The hypothesis ? based on a theory which takes language as constitutive of the social ? is that these laudos are representative of discursive formations which determine subjects and knowledge, create norms that circulate in society as well as participate in the order of Science, Politics and everyday behavior. On taking into account these discursive formations it is possible to consider the lettres de cachet in relation to historical processes which also gave rise to the modern psychological laudos and to the question of power over bodies that is present in procedures such as classifying, ordering, distributing and rarefying subjects. Methodology is based on the Indiciary Paradigm (Ginzburg, 1986) and data comes from children sent to a Public Hospital under the suspection of mental illness by teachers, medical doctors, psychologists etc
