Os rabidantes do Mercado de Sucupira : informalidade redes sociais e gênero

RESUMO

The growth of informal commerce in Cape Verde, constituted mainly of women, was selected as the object of study in this work. This research analyses the situation of women in the informal commerce in the Sucupira Market, located in Praia, the capital of Santiago Island in Cape Verde. They are known as rabidantes, that can be translated as informal traders and their activity includes constant trips to Brazil, Portugal and South Africa to purchase merchandises in order to resell them in the market. The fundamental objective of this research consisted of verifying as they develop their activities, the importance of the social and familiar networks, gender problematic and the process of social mobility that they represent in an economy, marked for the importation of the majority of the goods consumed by the population. The empirical and qualitative research was developed during the years 2006 and 2007. The data had been gotten by direct observation, semi-structured interviwes and field notes.
