RESUMO

This thesis intends to analyze the political activities of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCB), during the years 1936 and 1948, focusing the policy of national unity, the strategic line of bourgeois-democratic revolution and national liberation, supported by the communists through the anti-fascistic struggle conjuncture and World War II. Taking the party documents as sources, I discuss the theory and practice waged by PCB in different moments of that political period, from Vargas pro-fascistic Estado Novo regime, until his deposition in 1945, passing through the legalization of the Communist Party, its participation in 1945 and 1947 elections, its illegalization in 1947, the rising of anti-fascistic mass movements, the declaration of war against the axis, the approximation between the communists and Vargas, the October 29th coup dâ Ãtat, the spreading of the workers strikes in the years 1945/1946, the anti-communism and Cold War. Brazil is the main scene in this work, nevertheless I privileged the information obtained in Bahia in order to stress the relevance of the contribution that communists of that state gave to the history of PCB, a supposedly national and centralized party and by this way to strength the historioghaphic effort that aims to valorize the study of historic experiences lived beyond the southern regions of Brazil
