RESUMO

Language teachers are constantly seeking ways to help their students to better succeed in their efforts to learn and communicate in a foreign language. Learning strategies may be seen as a way that leads students to reach better performance. This paper, linked to the research line Pedagogical practice and its relation with teachers education, aims to investigate the impact of strategies-based instruction on student performa nce on speaking skills. An intervention research was conducted having the following objectives: (a) investigate an upper intermediate-level group of student performance and difficulties in order to develop the materials and activities for instruction, and to integrate learning strategies to activities, according to the groups needs and difficulties; (b) describe the impact of the strategies-based instruction, and analyze the results in terms of the development of English speaking skills.The instruments used for data collection were: a pre and post-test speaking task battery, a structured and closed questionnaire on the frequency of strategies used before and after the intervention and an informal interview with the group in order to evaluate the results of the activities and the intervention. The results indicate a positive outcome for self-confidence or fluency due to the strategies instruction. For the acceptability of grammar and vocabulary there was no significant development in quantitative analysis. Nevertheless, there was some indication of better speech quality concerning the use of more complex structures and vocabulary. A meaningful finding which emerged in this research was the fact that the incorporation of metacognitive strategies was higher than cognitive strategies in terms of the frequency of strategy use after the intervention. Data is discussed in terms of the importance of valuing and including learning strategies in language teacher education as a way of providing students with tools that trigger better ways of optimizing their learning, as well as having a role as a development resource for student autonomy.
