RESUMO

This study presents the historic journey of the Black Community of Arturos Family members who are descendents of the African Camilo Silvério who came to Brazil in the second quarter of the 18th century as a slave Surviving slavery he started his own fanily and left them a legacy of resistance and strong faith in Our Lady of the Rosary as well as in the black saints Saint Benedict and Saint Efigenia and the family ancestors This faith is expressed even today by family members who take part in the Brotherhood of the Rosary in Contagem and the Congada and Reisado More especifically this is study details the way of life, beliefs and values of the descendents of Arthur Camilo Silvério the son of Camilo Silvério, who founded the community called Arturos in reference to his name It is a study about how the community survived the period after slavery was abolished shows how families were formed how marriages are structured work education and day-to day interaction with the holy events that have become family celebrations The study emphasizes strongly the celebration as it is through celebration that the family stays united and finds support to face the challenges that society imposes on a daily basis The fieldwork consisted of conducting interviews with members of the community ensuring that the voices of five generations of men and women from Arturos were heard The result is an enormous collection of data about the family and its Bantu way of life how they organize themselves and how they face the challenges of today and tomorrow
