RESUMO

Lettuce is the most consumed salad vegetable in Brazil. Organic production of vegetables is expanding for offering foods with high biological value and exempt of contamination. The acomplishment of this system of production demands the use of natural fertilizers and the like. Thus, studies that prove the quality of organic residues that may act as fertilizers assume great importance. The biodiesel industry generates co-products in the form of seed meals with high amounts of macronutrients and potential for soil and plant fertilization. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of sources and doses of nitrogen for the lettuce crop. The experiment was carried out in the Horticulture Sector of the Department of Agriculture of the Federal University of Lavras, MG, from june/2008 to august/2008. The experimental design was a 5x4 randomized block factorial with 3 repetions. The treatments consisted of four doses of nitrogen 0 (without nitrogen), half of the recommended dose (0,5 DR), recommended dose (DR) and double dose (2DR) of 5 nutrient sources: mineral (sulphate of ammonium, simple superphosphate and potassium chloride), castor meal, physic nut meal , radish meal and bokashi. For mineral fertilization and seed meals, the 150 kg.ha-1 of N dose was defined as recommended dose (DR). For bokashi, the 125 kg.ha-1 dose was defined as recommended dose (DR). After 35 days the plants were harvested and the following characteristics evaluated: height of plants, leaf number per plant, fresh weight and dry weight of the aerial part. Interaction between fertilizers and doses was observed. Mineral fertilization and bokashi resulted the best values for the characteristics at 300kg.ha-1 and 250 kg.ha-1 de N, respectively (two times the recommended dose-2DR). All characteristics presented equivalent performance at 150 kg.ha-1 N (recommended dose-DR). As for the seed meals, doses above 150 kg.ha-1 N resulted in worse results.
