RESUMO

Leakage current monitoring is frequently used to evaluate the degradation in the insulation capacity of insulator strings of overhead transmission lines, due to pollution. The pollutants accumulation over the surface of the insulators strings, together with humidity, lead to an increase in the current leak over the insulatorâs surface, in turn producing the onset of dry bands and partial discharges. A complete optical sensing system for monitoring the leakage current flowing over those insulators was developed, based on an innovative, simple, rugged, low-cost, and rapid response configuration for the sensing head. This sensor system was used in laboratory and field experiments to identify the leakage current attributes correlated with the degree of pollution on insulators strings. A microcontroller based electronic module was developed and optimized to allow real-time recording of the frequency of occurrence and amplitude of current pulses, superimposed to the leakage current waveform, caused by the partial discharges localized next to the insulators strings. The pulses were classified into amplitude levels and the number of pulses per hour was recorded in each observation level. The system was also used for real time observation of the leakage current flowing on insulator strings during washing. Data collected by six sensor units installed on specific insulator strings of CHESFâs electrical transmission system, four of which in substations and two on a tower, were used for correlation studies of leakage current activity with the pollution level of insulators strings
