RESUMO

Through history, the Dentistry was based on the evolution process health/disease and, in the last decades, has been facing de decrease of the activity of the main oral disease, the cavity. This decrease brought up the need for a philosophy change, and new specialties were created in order to insert the Dental professional in the Health Promotion field. Thus, the Dentistry Federal Council created the specialty ?Labour Dentistry? and defined it as the specialty that aims to permanently search for the compatibility between the labour activity and the preservation of the worker?s oral health. This paper aimed to evaluate perception and knowledge through a quality/quantity evaluation questionnaire related to two groups: 1) Graduating students majoring in Odontology of the State of Paraná from Public and Private Institutions; 2) Dental surgeons of the State of Paraná, general dentist and specialists. The results informed that 88,55% of the professionals and 89,51% of the students agreed about the new specialty creation. As for providing arguments to evaluate the knowledge about the new specialty, 58,90% of the professionals did not contribute with any idea. Out of those who supported their opinion, only 26,64% presented coherence in their responses when compared to the Dentistry Federal Council resolutions that define and rule the specialty. The general average in the test question about the new specialty knowledge was 5,50, which is reasonable. It?s possible to conclude that: - The creation of the Labour Dentistry was not yet absorbed by the professionals and graduating students of the Dental class, considering the conflictive opinions obtained in the argument-required questions. It?s proper to make the new specialty known so that professionals can change their point of view about it and become more enabled to promote health
