Odette Ernest Dias: discursos sobre uma perspectiva pedagógica da flauta.

RESUMO

The aim of the present thesis was to investigate and outline the flute pedagogy developed by Odette Ernest Dias between 1974 and 1994, when she taught at the Universidade de Brasília. An important figure in the artistic-pedagogical history of Brazilian flute performance, Odette had a marked influence on the behavior of her students, who were characterized by their diversity as flautists and by their communion of feelings, thought processes, and activity as teachers. This thesis comprises four chapters: I. Objectives and methodology; II. Theoretical bases; III. Odette: trajectory and discourse; and IV. Discourses of former students. As a substitute to the traditional conclusion, I present an open Discourse. The research process allowed for an intense reflection on a pedagogical approach criticized for not teaching pure technique. I attempted to retrieve and formalize relevant information on an educational process under constant transformation and mutation, centered on the individual and his or her origins. I have encountered a pedagogical perspective based on respect, flexibility, self expression, emotion, provocation, motivation, integrity with the students, dialogue, humility, tolerance, pedagogical tact, interaction with context, and encouragement to questioning, components that, in addition to their significance to the life of her former students, are being transmitted, through them, to the new generations of flutists. While developing this thesis, I received the unconditional support of Odette herself in the form of letters, frequent conversations, and an interview. I also received complete support from former students through e-mail correspondence, personal contact, and interviews. In addition, my work was based on literature in the fields of Education, Musical Education, and the Social Sciences, as an attempt to establish a dialog between the various discourses I collected.
