RESUMO

The manufacture of structural components for application in high temperatures and aggressive environments involves the use of materials that maintain their chemical, mechanical and physical properties even in temperatures above 1000°C. A possible altemative to meet such requirements is the use of directionally solidified euteetie alloys. Such process allows the obtainment ofin situ composite materials, with elevated high temperature stability. In the present work, alloys in the Nb-AI and Nb-Al-X (X=Ti, Cu, Cr, Si and Ni) systems were obtained and processed. lnitially, samples were analyzed regarding the solidification microstructure in the aseast condition through conventional metallographie techniques, with the objective to identify compositions presenting euteetie structures. This study resulted in the identification of a new euteetie alloy, i.e. of a new AhNb-Nb2AI-AlNbNi temary structure. Further, the euteetie alloys were directionally solidified using Bridgman technique in furnare with inductive heating. The resultant microstructures were characterized in terms of solidification conditions. AIso, the mechanieal behavior was evaluated through hardness testing, fracture thoughness using Viekers indentation technique and hot compressing. In a final stage, the oxidation resistance and the high temperature microstructure stability of the alloys were evaluated. The results obtained allowed to understand the mode of solidifiecent atmospherie conditions
