RESUMO

The aim of this project was to study bio-diesel fuel as an alternative source of renewable, non-polluting, environmentally friendly energy, given contemporary societyâs concerns with our enormous dependence on petroleum as our main source of energy both for industry and in our daily lives. Bio-diesel production implies the reduction of the import of petroleum products and the growth of Brazilâs foreign trade, and maybe the export of any surplus of bio-diesel produced for the internal market, thus contributing to compliance with our commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. In Brazil, the federal government has encouraged research into bio-fuels through its National Program for the Production and Use of Bio-diesel, set up in 2004. Bio-diesel is now starting to look like a viable means of reducing Brazilâs dependence on petroleum products, as well as a means of developing a new market for vegetable oils. The development of a market for bio-diesel is a new and dynamic opportunity in the field of agri-business, with a multiplier effect on other sectors of the economy. Itâs not a question of simply adding bio-diesel to conventional diesel fuel. We have to evaluate what this new fuel will mean for agriculture, for industry, for the environment, for income generation, for employment and for raw materials supplies, among other economic and social factors. With the aim of stimulating economic development in the semi-arid region of Brazilâs northeast, this project made a study of the possible impacts which the introduction of bio-diesel production would have on it. The introduction of bio-diesel production based on castor oil could push development of the northeastern semi-arid region and improve social conditions for its people, by mobilizing the areaâs productive forces
