RESUMO

Concerns about the humanization of hospital care, financial results, hospital costs, the need of supporting decision-making and negotiation, the need for specialized professionals to provide quality and safe healthcare with an adequately-sized staff allocated among the different medical specialties, as well as the utilization of computerized information systems that enable planning actions in real time within the healthcare context have all become more evident over the years. The goal of this study was to examine the use of information systems used to estimate the size of the nursing personnel, by reviewing national and international literature. This is a qualitative study, using the Integrative Literature Review method, based on the precepts of GANONG (1987), JACKSON (1980) and COOPER (1982). Data collection was performed by researching the available literature on the LILACS, MEDLINE and CINAHL databases, in order to identify studies performed in the 1998-2008 period about the topic. The resulting sample yielded 12 studies, most of them articles found in international journals. The articles showed different aspects of the investigations, ranging from software screenshots to conclusions that this resource allows for a large knowledge database of indicators on nursing care necessities. The results point to a future perspective of enhancement of computer tools that will support the daily nursing activities, especially in the healthcare cooperation and management areas. The use of this type of technology will ensue advances in healthcare, as the information systems show a comprehensive panorama of healthcare in hospital and public health environments in real time.
