The literature presents various studies on stress and burnout of the professors working at different levels of education, however the stress of childrens educator has been little searched. The studies were on attendance policy for children from zero to six year old, the formation of the childrens educator, the characterization of the diverse types of attendance, but not specifically on the stress of this professional category. For this reason, the present work had for objective to verify the occupational level and sources of stress in educators, of diverse types of institutions working with education that take care of children from zero to six year old. Sixty two educators were evaluated, with ages varying from 25 to 38 years that worked in four different educational services in Campo Grande, MS. Three questionnaires were used for the data collection. The Questionnaire of Occupational stress of the Infantile Educator that verified the profile and the evaluation of the educators about the professional activity and the sources of stress at work. The Inventário de Sintomas de Stress (ISS), which presents the incidence of stress and types of symptoms. And the Escala de Avaliação de Reajustamento Social that points to the external sources of stress in the last twelve months. These instruments were applied after the participants signed the term of consent at the workplace where the data collection was conducted. The results showed a high incidence of stress symptoms for the educators within the institutions, with prevalence of physical symptoms. There was not significant difference among the studied institutions. There was a high prevalence of educators in the exhaustion phase. The participants presented high predisposition to get sick in function of the intense changes occurred in their lives in last the 12 months. The group did not evaluate their work as stressful, considering it to be satisfactory, even though they pointed the low wages and the instability in the job as sources of stress. This study showed the necessity of the reorganization of the structural aspects of the institutions dealing with childrens education within the private and public domain, and the valuation and social recognition of this professional activity. Consequently, these measures would improve these educators` quality of life as well as the children, who stay great part of their days in these establishments. There is also the necessity of programs that favor the prevention and reduction of stress within institutions for childrens education.
