RESUMO

The purpose this study is to present the evolution and the performance of the Gaucho Financial System, in the period between 1959 and 1989. It restrics itself basically to the performance of the following institutions based in Rio Grande do Sul during the period above mencioned: Commercial Banks, Investiment Banks , Financing Agencies, Banks of Development and the Caixa Econômica Estadual. As far as temporal space is concerned this analisis is divided in four parts; First: From 1959 up to the coming of the Bank Reform in 1964/5; Second: From the Bank Reform until the fusion of the Província, Banmercio, e Sulbanco, giving origen to the Sul Brasileiro; Third: From the founding of the Sul Brasileiro until the crisis that culminated in the liquidation of the conglomeration Sulbrasileiro, Habitasul, and Maisonnave, in 1985; Fourth: From the above mentioned liquidations until the founding of the first Multiple Banks, in 1989. Together with the presentation of the evolution and development of the Gaucho Financial Institutions, this work highligts the iniciatives and decisions that culminated in the founding of several establishments such as the Caixa Econômica Estadual, the BRDE, the Badesul, the Meridional an the first Gaucho Multiple Banks. It also portraits the conditions and the process taht lead to the transfering of these bases and the extintion of establishments, in consequence of the intervention/liquidation, incorporation or fusion as in the case of the Agrímer, Província, Banmercio, Sulbanco, Sul Brasileiro, Habitasul, Maisonnave, BRDE and others. The study disserts also about the fali in participation of the Gaucho Commercial Banks in the total of Deposits and Loans from the Commercial Banks in Brazil, during the three last decades. It ends with an analisis of the main Sulriograndense Financial Institutions, in activity at the end of 1988, that had been concidered in good situation, having, therefore, favorable perspectives for performance if, considering its size, economic conjuncture were adopted strategies adequate to the enviroment in wich they operate and, above all, were administrated with seriousness and competence.
