RESUMO

To combine in a systematic review results of publications on the Program of Humanization of Prenatal Care and Childbirth (PHPN) and to compare information regarding prenatal care of women from São Carlos, SP, obtained from the prenatal chart and from SISPRENATAL, assessing compliance with the minimum requirements and the process indicators as proposed. Subjects and Methods: For the systematic review, the primary studies on the subject were identified by consulting the databases MedLine and Scielo from 2001 upwards, with information obtained from SISPRENATAL or other sources. A metaanalysis was then performed, estimating the pooled proportion for each process indicator with its respective 95%CI. For the study in São Carlos, SP, a cross sectional study of 1489 women admitted for childbirth by Public Health System at the Maternity of S. Carlos was performed, between November 2008 and October 2009. The data on prenatal care were collected from prenatal chart and from SISPRENATAL. The information was compared between the two sources using the McNemar ?2 test for related samples. Results: According to the articles included in the systematic review, process indicators showed an increase in their record across the period by both data sources, with lower values registered in SISPRENATAL. The coverage of prenatal care in São Carlos was 97.1% according to the prenatal chart and 92.8% according to SISPRENATAL, with significant difference between both sources of information for all the minimum requirements and process indicators. The prenatal chart had more recorded information than SISPRENATAL (except for the first prenatal visit). The proportion of women with six or more visits and all basic lab exams was 72.5% by the chart and 39.4% by the official system, differences held for the five municipalities´ health areas. Conclusions: There was a low coverage of PHPN according to SISPRENATAL, compared with other sources of information, with the only exception of the proportion of pregnant women in relation to the number of live births. This was 23.05% on average in SISPRENATAL among several articles, while 15.94% according to other sources. In São Carlos, SISPRENATAL was not a reliable source for assessing the information available about prenatal care. There was a great adhesion to PHPN, but the registry of the information was flawed. After ten years of starting the program, it is now up to municipalities to adequate the quality of care and technical training for correct documentation of health information
