RESUMO

Historically the condition of the animal has been treated by the light of moral perfectionism developed by Aristotle and Aquinas with small variations. Animals have a place in the world in order to serve man. The reaction to the perfectionist conception has become prominence in the Peter Singers and Tom Regans voices. They are philosophers dedicated to the exam of the animal condition. However, Singers propositions like Regans have been criticized by arguments that sometimes put them in trouble. An approach about animal condition which can at the same time to react to the moral perfectionism and to escape from the objections against Singer and Regan is not an easy task. Nevertheless, ethics can be thought from alterity on in which responsibility assumes the main role and it can be showed as a good way. In this context, stand out the names of Kierkegaard and Lévinas, philosophers that thought alterity and responsibility in an innovating ways. So, what is intended to analyze in this study are the perspectives about animal condition from Kierkegaards and Lévinas reflections on. The text is developed in three steps: the first and the second are dedicated to the study of topics of Kierkegaards and Lévinas thought in necessary limits for approaching specifically, in the third, the way that it was and can be thought the animal condition by Lévinas and Kierkegaard and from them on. From the Kierkegaardian thought the most prominence was given to the neighbour and alterity themes both deeply developed in Works of Love. Concerning to Lévinas, the same proposition is adopted. A special attention was given to the matter of alterity, emphasizing themes about replacement and responsibility from which Lévinas treated with more vigour from Otherwise than Being on. In this bases, it is approached in the third step the animal condition in Kierkegaards and Lévinas philosophy specifically. Of Kierkegaard, the text that received more attention was The Field Lilies and the Birds of the Sky. In relation to Lévinas, the emphasis was given to the text The name of a Dog or Natural Rights. In this third step, are also exposed Aristotles and Aquinas reflections, concerning to the animal matter and the contemporary ones by nowadays critics, Peter Singer and Tom Regan. It was also decided to include Jacques Derridas and Giorgio Agambens reflections about the theme in the study with an emphasis between ethics and jury. Along the text, to emphasize important aspects or offering counterpoints to the Kierkegaards and Lévinas reflections are evoked Hegel, Freud, Buber and Rosenzweig among others
