RESUMO

This study focuses on peasant womenâs condition. It aims to analyze female identityâs building/(re)building in the Engenho Prado rural settlement, in the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco state (Northeast Brazil). The researched population is composed by 140 women who are responsible or co-responsible for respective family as they face dominance/subjection inside the settlement and struggle for their own insertion and visibility in public sphere. The research results show that, although domination/ subordinationâs relationship appears as a historical phenomenon wich is found in current society, women in that settlement conquered some space in male hegemonic context as long as they become subjects in the frame of the struggle for land. Socialization process and the contact with democractic procedures inside the settlement awake their critical ability which allows them a new world conception in opposition to prevaling values. The main conclusions of the study can be pointed out as follows: a) the organizing capacity of subaltern groups and their struggle potential in hegemonic process; b) the (re)building of gender identity in rural area, the participation and achievement of political spaces by female peasant workers who take part in the struggle for land
