RESUMO
This thesis is a critical analysis of the republican project for national education proposed by Jose Verissimo, from a historical perspective, i.e., a study of the determinations deriving from the ensemble of social relations under which the proposed object was researched. The point of departure was the category of "history" in order to capture the categories that configure the historical period in which the object of analysis situated. Bom within the context of republican struggles of the end of the XIX century that aimed at inserting Brazil within the political and economic order of modern countries, the educational project reproduces the same outlines of this social, economic and political struggle then taking place. The pedagogical work of Jose Verissimo is interpreted within the context of these contradictions and conflicts showing how bis republican conception of national education is rooted in the effort to protect the Brazilian character of its social forces, in this attempt to promote its development
