RESUMO

The aim of the research is to analyse the processes behind the management of nursing work in a federal public hospital. The research is being done from the perspective of the nursing management team and in addition has the following aims: to identify and analyse concepts and images of nursing management on the wider management process; discussion of the methodology used amongst nursing management; the character and perception of practical management; the relationship between technical, communicative, politic and development dimensions of the citizenship of the managing work and the ways which they apply at the studied reality. This research analyses the political and contextual quality of the management process of nursing in the hospital context. It is a qualitative study whose methodology is based on the dialectic-hermeneutic premises which aim to understand the process of managing nursing work in both a comprehensive and critical way. The analytical framework is developed from the writings of Marx, Gonçalves, Merthy, Campos and other studies of the leadership process, nursing and health management. Thirteen testimonials from manager-nurses were collected in structured interviews and have been included for further testimony and evidence. The research is divided into the following areas: the process of managing work, the material and technical conditions of work, how leadership is used as a management tool, the political dimension of nursing management work, analysis of the results demonstrating the practice of management based on theoretical models, the use and evaluation of a bipolar management model, an examination of administrative functions of control and organization and their predominance within management and finally an investigation of the consequent politicisation of management and those in their care. The study also examines the poor conditions of work and investigates the resulting psychological difficulties that nursing management and those in their care may experience. The research asserts that autocratic styles of leadership can lead to tensions within interpersonal relationships, the need for constant education and professional development and finally the development of sound professional relationships through skilled leadership and management which values a multidisciplinary approach.
