RESUMO

Introduction: The patient-doctor relationship is the essence of the medical praxis. Its understanding is of high relevance, actually acknowledged by its intense study. The pediatrician-child relationship is inserted in this context, with some peculiarities, like the perception about the child, which has been changing over time, as well as his acting in this context. Objectives: In this study, the theoretical bioethics reference was used, with the approach of Virtue Ethics in order to comprise the pediatriciansâ views about the Respect as Principle of the Pediatrician-Child Relationship and to observe convergences and divergences between theory and practice. Methodology: This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, performed through individual semi-structured interviews and the participant observation. Thirteen pediatricians were interviewed, all of them on duty at a public pediatrician hospital in Recife, Pernambuco, following MinayoÂs criteria of saturation. The field research occurred between March and August of 2006. The data analysis was qualitative, Minayoâs theme modality, adapted from Bardin. Outcome and Discussion: It was observed that the respect in the pediatrician-child relationship is related with the theoretical concept of Respect, whether understood as limit, wheter as relationship with the other; we also observed the construction of the relationship, where we reached the same categories and the perception of the child by the pediatrician in his moral and cognitive development and the ability of understanding the relationship, that besides the two subjetcs mentioned, states the family dialogue as decisive. The plans are interlinked in the final construction of the Principle studied, when we reached two final themes: 1- the child as a moral subject is the translation of the child as a being, object of the praxis, with emphasis on the values, humanist view of the other as a whole. 2- the search for excellence is understood as the pediatricianâs approach in the scientific knowledge and his particular skill in the specialty, but intending to do good. Surprise by the subject was observed, interest for Bioethics as an approach in the relationships and in life, as well as chronological age as a limiting factor of pediatricians in the perception of the child. There was quite a varied insertion of the family in the relationship, from a secondary role to the main one. Three plans of Respect for the pediatrician were distinguished: philosophical idealization, academy theorization, and the real plan, experienced in medical practice. Conclusion: The child is seen as a moral subject, by a great part of the pediatricians. The search for excellence, with the right motivation, makes the pediatrician an agent of virtue predisposition, in the Virtue of Ethics. The Respect as a principle is in the relationship pediatrician-child, in the perception of the professionals; what varies is its definition and application in praxis, due to the adverse conditions of the present
