RESUMO

Four near isogenic inbreds of maize sinlge mutants homozygous for the opaque-2, shrunken, shrunken-2 and sugary genes, and their normal counterparts, as well as the single cross HS 7777, were used to study the reIationship among osmotic potential, dry weight, water content and RNase activity in the endosperm. The plants were grown on adjoining plots ate the Experimental Field of Universidade Estadual de Campinas. The plots, with a density of 50000 plants/ha were fertilized with N, ?P IND.2??0 IND. 5? and ?K IND. 2??0? at 80, 80 and 30 Kg/ha respectively. The plants were self or split pollinated toyield respectively homozigous or segregant ears, to allow the study of dosage effect of these genes on endosperms characteristics. All characteristics were altered in the same way in the mutants endosperm in comparison with their normal counterparts. The osmotic potential decreased in the mutants and was negatively correlated with water content and positively correlated with dry weight of seeds. The shrunken-2 mutant showed a reduction of about 90% in the osmotic potential of endosperm. As a consequence, water content increased 80% and dry weight 30% in relation to normal endosperm. ?F IND. 1? seeds from dialelic crosses of three imbreds with normal endosperm, showed a significative heterotic effect on osmotic potential and dry weight...
