RESUMO

This thesis analyses the environmental problems generated by gypsum mining, characterizing its way of exploitation and its implication to the natural environment. Besides a diagnosis of the situation of the affected area, this work offers some suggestions for a rational administration of the natural resources in question. A geo-environmental map was made, in a scale of I: I 00,000, according to the current environmental dynamics, under some parameters of the elements of the physical environment, in order to find the aptitude of the units that were identified for land use, maintenance and preservation, that will help to build a plan of economic activities. The area of study is located in the Araripe Gypsum District, in the west of the State of Pernambuco, northeast Brazil. Mining gypsum has provoked deforestation, bush fire, erosion of the soil, and changes in the water resources. The approach of this research covers several disciplines, focusing on man-nature relations starting from human intervention in the environment and the modifications verified in the natural resources caused by mining activity. The main contributions of this thesis are: a) making a map of the vegetation and land use and analysis/treatment of images of the area of study taken by the 1999 Landsat TM 7 satellite scale 1:225,000; b) making of geo-environmental chart of the area - scale 1:100,000; and c) environmental impact assessment in a sample of 15 out of the 47 mines of the region. Based on these documents, suggestions and recommendations are made for rational use of the natural resources. Conc1uding, it is notable that mining is partially responsible for the degeneration of the natural resources in the area and this might lead to an advance of the process of desertification and make this region vulnerable to this phenomenon
