RESUMO

The role of the librarian information professional, responsible for the information dissemination, regarding the need of access and use of scientific evidence in the medical area, and the emergence of the practice of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) constitutes the theme of this research, the aim of which is to investigate the role, attitudes, competencies and skills needed for the librarian to act together with medical teams in the EBM process. To reach this objective, this paper is supported by a theoretical picture articulated with field research at nine hospitals of the municipality of Salvador Bahia, with librarians and medical users, intending to investigate the librarians action in their support of medical practices within the EBM context. The basic instruments for data collection were the questionnaire and the interview. The empiric data analysis is performed through a quantitative and qualitative approach starting from the knowledge that this procedure is more adequate to understand and characterize the speech of the subjects under survey. The results show that the information dissemination favors EBM by developing work shared between doctors and librarians, which contributes significantly to the immediate access to scientific evidence directly benefiting the patients, recovering and widening the role of the librarian integrated within the context of medical practice. This way, the activities, that come out for the librarian involve actions related to the management of informational procedures, mediation, facilitation and, mainly the education of users to access informational resources and efficiently use data base, besides of to require the development of competencies in management, communication, information technology, education and personal abilities. The EBM is not yet a recurring subject at the hospitals in Salvador, the interaction between doctors and librarians is low since joint activities are hardly ever developed. But, professionals recognize that duly qualified librarians specialized in healthcare, can provide fundamental support for the medical practices, disseminated in the hospital environment, integrated in a health multidisciplinary team directed to EBM.
