RESUMO

The focus of this study is the role of the corporate university in the professional development of employees in a federal organization, the Correios, Brazils federal postal service. The theoretical basis included discussions on State Reform since the 1930s, role of the government employee in State Reform, change in the workplace, need for professional development, and role of the corporate university in the public sector. The main purpose of this study was to investigate how, through education, the employees developed a public company that is inserted in the current complex ever-changing business environment. This qualitative study involved 27 subject participants (directors, administrative personnel, managers, and postal mail carriers), individual interviews, and content analysis. Results indicated that the Corporate University of the Correios carried out important work in providing continuous education and improving employee performance, which generated a competitive advantage for the Company. The Corporate University of the Company could, however, make adjustments in some of its procedures, to better fit Meisters model (1999), which is based on developing and educating employees, customers, suppliers, and communities, to better meet the organizations business strategies and maintain its competitive edge, inspiring continuous learning and outstanding performance of the human capital in the organization.
