RESUMO

The null object in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) has been the aim of several studies, because it shows peculiarities that distinguish it from the null object of other languages, including European Portuguese. This dissertation shows the various proposals that have been made with respect to its syntactic status and shows what their inadequacies in explaining the phenomena are. Through the examinantion of phoric elements which may occur in object position, and focusing on certain pronouns and VP ellipsis, the proposal in this dissertation is that the null object of Brazilian Portuguese is the result of the same process underlying those phenomena. This proposal is based on the theory of "reconstruction at LF", developed by R. Fiengo and R. May (1993). The analysis of diachronic data shows how the null object of Brazilian Portuguese appeared. Because of an external change in the language, one of the options offered by the grammar for the position of direct object in certain structures, i.e., the clitic, was abandoned. Through the existence of robust evidence, there was a diachronic change which extended the possibility of reconstruction (and ellipsis) to-animate DP/NPs: the null object of BP. The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to the understanding of the phenomena involved in diachronic change, as well as the understanding of the facts of Brazilian Portuguese
