RESUMO

The System "Rio Abierto" ("Open River") is a system of mind-body therapy, which has the purpose to improve the harmonious development of each human being. To achieve this purpose several instruments are used such as the vital expressive movement (VEM), a body practice performed in groups. The VEM is part of the Integrative Health Project in the Campinas County Health Department and it is also part of a roll of integrative and complementary practices offered by the public health system. Given the growing interest in the use of integrative and complementary practices as resources in prevention and health promotion, we conducted this research in order to understand the meaning of what was experienced by the users in the groups of the Vital Expressive Movement - System "Rio Abierto", in a Basic Health Unit. A qualitative research approach was carried out since it better fits the purposes of this study. The survey was conducted at the Sousas Health Center, which is a district of Campinas-SP, where the participants joined in three distinct groups of VEM. The data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews and all the participants signed the Term of Consent. Twelve people were interviewed, these interviews were recorded, transcribed and the data submitted to categorical content analysis. The participants were mostly elderly retired women, of low education who have been practicing VEM for an average of 5.16 years. The data showed that participating in the group benefits the individual in various fields, such as less pain, better sleep quality, improvement of self-esteem, more social contact, promotion of new bonds, social support, among others, having a positive impact on their health. Thus, the VEM group helps to promote health, getting much closer to the groups of health promotion (GHP) by the full and comprehensive way to understand health than the treatment groups that maintain their focus on the disease.
