RESUMO

This dissertation aims to emphasize the importance of the book publishing and printing practices, as well as the importance of the new techniques of image reproduction to the Brazilian literary history of 19th century, and to the history of Brazilian romanticism, in particular. The thesis focuses on the context of the rise of the Brazilian novel, in the years 1840 s-1850 s, and points out to the fundamental role assumed by the editorial practices influenced and stimulated by the recent industrialization of the European press. The analysis of the magazine A Lanterna Mágica (1844-1845), allows us to follow the way satire, as a traditional genre, has been submitted to radical changes, adapting itself to the serial rhythms of the journalistic discourse, at the same time as it searched to emulate French graphic satire and the lithographic drawings of H. Daumier. Finally, we discuss the notions of style and authorial propriety in José de Alencar, as well as the function of description, historical scene and omament in his historical novels, which seem to answer or even to be motivated also by the growing importance assumed by printed images in his time
