O inglês no mercado de trabalho do secretário executivo bilíngüe: uma análise de necessidades

RESUMO

This study showsthe results of research in the area of English for Specific Purposes, developed to identify the needs of the two poles which constitute the basis for a course design elaborated within the ESP approach: the leamers the course is aimed at and the use they will make of the English language in their target situation. In order to obtain the data I needed, I used three different instruments: a questionnaire, 24 semi-structured interviews based on some job ads from 2 newspapers and a task list. The questionnaire was administered to 79 students of an undergraduate Bilingual Executive Secretary course given at a private university located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The data resulting from this procedure enabled me to identify: a) the students objective learning needs according to their social, economical and cultural characteristics; b) the students subjective leaming needs which correspond to their wants, their pedagogical preferences and their work in the job market, and c) the students leaming context, comprised of the data on when and wherethe course is given. In order to identify the needs which correspond to the use these students will make of the English language in their target situation, 24 semi-structured interviews were conducted with Corporate Human Resources and Job Agencies representatives, Bilingual Executive Secretaries, Bilingual Secretaries and third- and fourth-year students of the undergraduate Bilingual Executive Secretary course who are algo engaged in the job market. Through this procedure, I could identify both the tasks in English that the job market expects these professionals to do and the tasks that they really do in their daily, routine. These findings were particularly important to establish well-defined and clear objectives for the design of a Bilingual Executive Secretary Course to be carried out in the light of the English for Specific Purposes approach. In addition to that, the analysis of the data enabled me to arnve at the current profile of a Bilingual Executive SecretaIy and algO provided some hints on the English language level demanded of these professionals by the job market. The methodological framework used for the analysis of the data was based on Hutchinson&Waters ideas (1987) and was complementedwith studies made byauthors such as Richterich (1977), Celani (1981,2001), Brindley (1989) and Dudley-Evans &St John (1998), among others
