RESUMO

This thesis is a study of religious festivals in nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro. Focusing primarily on the largest of them, the festival of the Holy Spirit, it analizes popular cultural manifestacions - theatre, music, dances, gambling and others diversions in their dynamic relationship with other artistic genere. Complementarily, the thesis investigates strategies of control and the possibilities for tolerence undertaken by municipal and religious authorities, as well as the means for continuity and renovation of the city s "traditional" festival and popular cultural manifestacions
