RESUMO

This document is the Final Report of a research project sponsored by the Center of Research and Publications from the Getulio Vargas Foundation São Paulo Business School. The Report analyzes the Health Care Wastes Management Plans written by 70 Brazilian hospitals after being trained in a course offered by the Santa Catarina State Federal University and the Getulio Vargas Foundation. The program was suggested by UNESCO and financed by international banks, under the supervision of REFORSUS, an agency belonging to the Brazilian Health Department. For each Plan, 164 data were collected and tabulated in an EXCEL data base. Of these, 12 contained general information about the hospital; 141 described the structure and the current procedures; and 11 referred to the future wastes management plan. The present wastes management system, encompassing infectious, chemicals, radioactive, domestic and perforating-cutting residues, was appraised in respect to their collection, storage, internal and external treatments, removal and final disposal. The water supply, treatment and consumption, the liquid effluents and gaseous emissions were also investigated. Besides, the plans produced by the hospitals for their future wastes management were analyzed from technical and economical standpoints. The research results show that most hospitals studied are still in an incipient stage of their waste management. They lack structure, human and financial resources as well as efficient management. There exists a considerable gap between the actual waste management and the legal requirements that hospitals must comply with in the sanitary and environmental areas.
