RESUMO

This study is a contribution to the space-time knowledge on the phytoplankton community of Recife Metropolitan Area beaches, southern Pernambuco coast, Brazil. Samples were collected with 45 μm-mesh plankton net and bottle during the rainy (May, June and July/2005) and dry seasons (November and December/2005, and January/2006) at BrasÃlia Formosa, Boa Viagem and Piedade beaches. Environmental data such as depth, water temperature, salinity, pH, suspended material, dissolved oxygen, saturation percentage, nutrients (nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and silicate), air temperature, precipitation, and wind direction and velocity, were assessed. Of the 124 identified taxa, Bacillariophyta was the most representative followed by Dinophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, Euglenophyta, and Chrysophyta. The most representative diatoms were Asterionellopsis glacialis, Bellerochea malleus, Dactyliosolen fragilissimus, Heliotheca thamensis and Licmophora abbreviata indicating environmental adaptation ability and suggesting a classification as opportunistic. The specific seasonal environmental conditions altered species composition, total density and chlorophyll-a, with the dry season showing it better. Despite sporadic phytoplankton blooms in the area, the ecosystem morphology and dynamics contributed to the absence of accumulations forming diatom patches throughout this sector of the coast
