RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to investigate who are the medical residentsâ mentors, what mentoring functions they offer and how important functions offered are, according to Hospital Osvaldo Cruz and Hospital das ClÃnicas medical residents perceptions. Mentoring literature was used and particularly Noeâs study on mentoring types of functions. A residency training program is the final preparation to practice. There were 146 residents at Hospital das ClÃnicas and 111, at Hospital Osvaldo Cruz. A questionnaire was used to survey the medical residents. The research was characterized as sectional. Results permitted to verify that the preceptors, formal mentors, not always offered mentoring functions. Professors and family related doctors are mentors. It also suggested that mentors provide two functions, a career function and a psychosocial function. The medical residents perceived mentoring functions as very important. Finally, based on the results a few recommendations were offered to residency programs and preceptors in order to improve mentoring relationships during programs and make personal and professional development more effective for the young doctors
