RESUMO

This study investigates the rise and consolidation of the concepts of "nation and "people", in nineteenth-century Brazil, as an intellectual paradigm which bounded the thought of a group of writers generally identified as "romantic generations". Even when separated by party-lines, or by partaking in the official protection, all those writers attributed to themselves and their works an important role in the building of a national state. This role, played through the making of a nationalliterature, is that we call here the men of letters burden
